It depends on your use case. For reasoning and math, GPT-o3 leads the leaderboard. For everyday tasks, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 2.5 Pro are excellent. For open-source, DeepSeek-R1 and Llama 4 Scout are top choices.
Gemini 2.5 Pro has a generous free tier via Google AI Studio. For open-source models you can run yourself, DeepSeek-V3, Llama 3.3 70B, and Phi-4 are all excellent and completely free. Ollama makes running these locally very easy.
GPT-4o is OpenAI's multimodal model optimized for fast, general-purpose tasks. GPT-o3 is a dedicated reasoning model that "thinks" before responding, making it significantly better at math, science, and complex problem-solving — but slower and more expensive.
Ollama is the easiest way — install it, then run `ollama pull llama3.3` to download any supported model. LM Studio is another popular GUI-based option. For production deployments, vLLM provides high-throughput serving on GPU servers.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) connects an LLM to your own documents or databases. Instead of relying purely on training data, the model retrieves relevant context before responding — giving accurate, up-to-date, and source-grounded answers.
